Gimenez regarding aerial spraying on Miami Beach  This morning, the City of Miami Beach hosted an emergency workshop to discuss our ongoing efforts to keep our residents and visitors safe from the Zika virus. Yesterday, in consultation with the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, Governor Rick Scott's Office, the Florida Department of Health and the Department of Agriculture, I directed Miami-Dade County's Mosquito Control team to begin adulticide aerial spraying in the 1.5-square-mile area of Miami Beach where locally-acquired cases of Zika have been confirmed and three mosquito traps have tested positive for Zika. I announced yesterday that the spraying would begin Thursday around 5:00 a.m. During today's meeting with the City of Miami Beach, City leadership and residents asked for more time to prepare and inform Miami Beach residents and visitors about our aerial-spraying plan. In consultation with health experts and the City of Miami Beach, we have agreed to delay aerial spraying with adulticide by one day. We will begin spraying on Friday around 5:00 a.m, weather permitting, and will spray this Sunday, and the following two weekends. This schedule will minimize disruption to our school children and families. I thank the City of Miami Beach, residents and visitors for their collaboration as we continue to do all we can to keep our community safe from the Zika virus. Miami, Fl. 16 de agosto,  2016.  Este septiembre, Miami será la ciudad anfitriona de la primera Conferencia Cuba Internet Freedom (CIF).  La conferencia reunirá un grupo de innovadores digitales y periodistas independientes cubanos, junto a otros líderes enfocados en la transformación digital de Cuba, y en el acceso sin censura de internet en la isla. El evento está organizado por la Oficina de Transmisión a Cuba (OCB por sus siglas en inglés),  y se llevará a cabo el lunes 12 y martes 13 de septiembre, en el icónico edificio del Miami Ad School, del Wynwood Art District, Miami. CIF será parte de Social Media Week Miami , la conferencia anual sobre innovación en redes que se extiende la semana completa hasta el viernes 16 de septiembre, 2016.

En CIF un grupo de líderes del mundo digital, representantes de gobiernos, empresarios  y ciudadanos interesado en el desarrollo de internet en Cuba, intercambiarán ideas con el objetivo de examinar el estado actual de internet en la isla, la adopción de mejores prácticas, y vías para apoyar su crecimiento.

Durante dos días de sesiones, paneles y talleres, el Miami Ad School será sede de un foro compuesto por pioneros e innovadores del mundo digital, que discutirán temas como ‘¿Quién se puede conectar y cómo?’,  ‘Las redes clandestinas cubanas’, ‘Internet como derecho universal’, ‘Disidencia y Activismo en la era digital’. 

Cuba ha sido catalogada por la organización Freedom House como el país más restrictivo del hemisferio occidental en tecnologías de información y comunicación, y con una de las tasas más bajas de penetración de Internet en el mundo. Recientemente, la Organización de Naciones Unidas (ONU) declaró el acceso a internet como un derecho humano; una resolución a la cual Cuba se opuso.

mosquito control efforts in Miami Beach 

Miami-Dade County's Mosquito Control team continues to monitor the number of mosquitoes found in traps throughout the County. As it has been from the beginning, our goal is to reduce the cycle of Zika transmission by reducing the number of mosquitoes. 

Over the weekend, the number of mosquitoes found in traps in the 1.5-square-mile area in Miami Beach where mosquitoes have tested positive for Zika has increased. Despite the increase, it is important to note that all subsequent test results from mosquitoes in the same three trap locations have been negative for Zika. In order to continue our aggressive and proactive mosquito-control surveillance, monitoring and response, I, in consultation with Governor Rick Scott's Office, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Florida Department of Health and the Department of Agriculture, have directed Miami-Dade County Mosquito Control to begin four cycles of adulticide aerial spraying using EPA-approved naled in the 1.5-square-mile area where mosquitoes have tested positive for Zika. Weather permitting, the aerial spraying will begin Thursday at approximately 5 a.m. for the next four weeks and will be completed within a half hour.  We will keep the number of adulticide missions to a minimum on school days, and parents may prefer to keep students indoors until 6:30 a.m. following aerial spraying.

Due to the unique topography, high-rise buildings and construction sites on Miami Beach, at this time, we will focus our aerial spraying only on adulticide treatment and larvicide application on the ground by truck or by hand during inspections. This treatment differs slightly from the larvicide treatment we were able to perform both aerially and on the ground in the area north of downtown Miami where local transmission was first identified.

This morning, Miami-Dade County Mosquito Control also began an innovative ground-control larvicide treatment in Miami Beach using trucks equipped with Buffalo Turbines. As far as we know, Miami-Dade is one of the first counties in the nation to use this state-of-the-art equipment using EPA-approved Bti to target breeding areas and reduce the mosquito population. The truck sprayings will also take place over the next four weeks during early morning hours. The truck spraying events will be west of Washington Avenue between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., and east of Washington Avenue between the hours of 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., approximately every seven days.

I thank City of Miami Beach leaders for their ongoing collaboration as we continue to work to reduce the mosquito population, both aerially and on the ground.

Miami-Dade County is fully mobilized and we continue our proactive and aggressive response to reducing the Aedes Aegypti mosquito population. Prevention is the most important tool in our arsenal to keep our community safe from the Zika virus. Therefore, we continue to ask all residents and visitors to do their part to keep our community safe by draining standing water, wearing clothing that covers the skin and applying mosquito repellant when going outdoors, especially during early morning and evening hours.

Los ofrecimientos anticipados de recompra de carros VW le pueden costar dinero

Últimamente, nos hemos enterado de que hay personas que recibieron ofrecimientos de compra de sus carros VW o Audi de los modelos diésel 2.0 litros. Ofrecimientos recientes. Incluso algunas veces usando el término “recompra” – que no es exactamente un término muy usado en la compraventa de carros. 

¿Cuál es el problema? Vender tu carro ahora te podría costar dinero a largo plazo. Estos carros forman parte de un acuerdo con la FTC que distribuirá una suma que asciende a $10 mil millones de dólares entre los dueños y arrendatarios. Eso significa que VW recomprará carros afectados a un precio que, como mínimo, equivaldrá al costo de reposición y con frecuencia aún más. Puedes averiguar cuánto dinero recibirás en VWCourtSettlement.com. Ingresa el número de identificación de tu carro (VIN) en el sitio web y averigua cuánto te pagarán en total. También puedes llamar al 844-98-CLAIM y preguntar.

Pero VW y Audi todavía no están recomprando carros. La recompra de vehículos puede comenzar a fines del otoño de 2016. Y las autoridades de regulación ambiental todavía no han aprobado una modificación para los carros, lo cual permitiría que los dueños y arrendatarios de estos vehículos consigan una modificación para sus respectivos carros y reciban una compensación monetaria. Así que ahora no hay nada que hacer aparte de ir aVWCourtSettlement.com, averiguar cuánto dinero podrías recibir e indicar si prefieres la opción de recompra o la modificación. (Siempre puedes cambiar tu opción más adelante. Tienes tiempo hasta el 1 de septiembre de 2018 para presentar tu reclamación.)

¿Y entonces qué pasa si alguien te quiere comprar el carro ahora? Si puedes, espera a la recompra. Si no puedes, haz las cuentas para saber lo esencial. ¿Cuál es el monto de recompra de VW? ¿Y cuánto te ofrecen ahora? ¿No tienes problema con esa diferencia? Tienes que tener presente que la persona que hoy te compre tu carro diésel VW o Audi 2.0 litros se quedará con el dinero de esa recompra y podrá hacer la diferencia de dinero extra que tú te estás perdiendo ahora. Tal vez no tengas ningún problema – pero verifícalo antes de vender tu carro.
